The Power of Coaching for Women

In the journey that is life, I’m sure there are times when many of us reach significant crossroads, moments that demand a deeper reflection and a recalibration. For so many women, these crossroads can be particularly poignant, bringing about a sense of unease, a search for purpose, or a longing for transformation.

This is where the roles of a coach, counsellor, and mentor come into play. But what exactly is the difference between these roles, and how could coaching uniquely benefit you at this pivotal stage of life?

Understanding the Difference

A counsellor focuses on healing and addressing psychological issues. They help individuals understand their past, work through emotional pain, and develop strategies to cope with mental health challenges. Counselling is often a therapeutic process aimed at resolving specific issues.

A mentor is an experienced advisor who offers guidance, wisdom, and support based on their own experiences. Mentorship typically involves a long-term relationship where the mentor will provide advice and shares knowledge to help the mentee navigate their career or personal growth.

A coach, on the other hand, is a partner in your journey of self-discovery and goal achievement. Coaching is all about the future, not the past. Emphasising actionable steps and personal empowerment. Coaches help you identify your aspirations, set realistic goals, and create a plan to achieve them while providing ongoing encouragement, support and accountability.  A coach will gently challenge you when those pesky limiting beliefs pop up and will get you stepping out of your comfort zone more and more.

As many of you already know, I discovered coaching back in 2016.  Having a sounding board for all the thoughts in my head, having someone question and challenge me on my limiting beliefs and helping me to realise my full potential was life changing.  It had such an impact that it made me realise what had been missing from my business for so long so I went on to become a qualified Holistic Coach in 2019 and then furthered that training by qualifying as a Personal Performance Coach & Confidence Coach in 2023/24.

I know I’m not alone here.  So many women reach a point in life when they start questioning everything.   It can leave you feeling lost, uncertain of what’s next or even just thinking “is this it?”

I know many people think coaching isn’t for everyday people like you and me.  You must have a specific goal that you want to achieve before you even consider turning to a coach for help and support.
It’s not like that though.  Yes, coaching can help you achieve those goals faster than you would perhaps do so by yourself, but it can also help you look at life differently.
So often I have clients come to me thinking they want to make changes to their health and then we get started, all of these other things pop up.

Once we start digging a little into this everything in life starts to change, including that overall benefit to their health.

Here’s just a few ways that you could benefit from coaching.

Our overall health and wellbeing:

  • A coach can help you develop a fitness routine tailored to your changing body, ensuring that you stay active and healthy. She won’t tell you what to do but will help you discover new ways to exercise that fit around your life and needs.
  • Understanding the nutritional needs during peri to post-menopause is crucial. A coach can guide you in making dietary choices that support your overall wellbeing.
  • Coaches can show you how to introduce mindfulness practices and stress management techniques to enhance your mental and emotional health.

Empty Nest Syndrome

  • The transition to an empty nest can be challenging. You’ve been a Mum for so long and suddenly off they go to University, a job, a place of their own and you are left feeling ‘what now?’  A coach can help you rediscover your passions and interests, giving you a renewed sense of purpose and excitement about this new phase of life.

Personal Growth

  • Whether you want to start a new career, pick up a hobby, travel more, or simply find more joy in everyday life, coaching can provide the structure and support you need to rediscover yourself & achieve your personal goals.

In today’s digital society, we often find ourselves more connected yet more isolated than ever before. We might hesitate to burden our friends and family with our worries, and with the fast pace of life, meaningful conversations can become rare. This is where a coach can make all the difference. Coaches provide a dedicated space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment, offering a listening ear and constructive feedback.  They won’t give you advice but they will help you discover the answers from within.

In our mobile and often isolated lives, having someone to talk to who is dedicated to your growth and happiness is invaluable. A coach serves as that unwavering support, helping you navigate challenges and celebrate successes (I mean, when do we ever actually celebrate those successes?)

We often go through life focusing on all that we don’t want anymore but having no idea how to flip that to find what we DO want.  Who we want to BE and what we want to HAVE.

If you are reading this and now starting to question yourself and where you currently are in life, then not try these simple tips to help you start thinking a little differently.

  • Practice Gratitude: Take a few minutes each day to write down three things you are grateful for. This simple practice can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life.
  • Set Small Goals: If you’ve got a large goal you want to achieve, break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Celebrate each small victory towards that overall goal & build momentum and confidence.
  • Positive Self-Talk: Challenge negative thoughts as they pop up (with kindness and humour), be curious as to why you are saying that to yourself.  Try and replace them with more positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths and capabilities.
