Staying Fit and Healthy Amidst The Summer Fun
Summer is a season filled with opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation. The Olympics, holidays, BBQs, pub lunches, and gatherings with family and friends can make it challenging to maintain a fitness routine. However, it’s crucial to continue prioritising your health and wellbeing, even during this busy season. We’ve got some tips to help you stay active, beat the heat, and keep your workouts fun and motivating whilst still enjoying the Olympics and all those other things.
Beat the Heat
-
Early Morning Workouts – Take advantage of the cooler temperatures in the early morning. It’s a great way to start your day and ensures you get your exercise in before the heat sets in.
My top tip – get your workout clothes ready the night before so you don’t talk yourself out of it.
- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate – Staying hydrated is vital, especially when exercising in the summer heat. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workouts.
- Wear Appropriate Clothing – Opt for light, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabrics. Light-coloured clothing can help reflect the sun’s rays, keeping you cooler.
- Seek Shade – If you prefer exercising outside, find shaded areas like parks with plenty of trees or trails with covered paths. This can significantly reduce the impact of the sun.
Keep It Fun and Motivating
- Try New Activities – Summer is the perfect time to experiment with new forms of exercise. Try paddleboarding, kayaking, or beach volleyball. These activities are not only fun but also provide a great workout. I’m loving my weekly wild swim, not only am I swimming once or twice a week now but I’m also meeting new people and making new friends – win win!
- Join a Group – Exercising with friends or family can be more motivating. Join a local fitness group (or even better join our online classes) or start a workout routine with your neighbours. Group activities can be social and encouraging.
- Mix Up Your Routine – Keep things exciting by varying your workouts. Alternate between cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. This variety will keep you engaged and help prevent burnout. You all know my thoughts on strength/resistance training but don’t underestimate the benefits of more mindful classes like Pilates and Stretch.
- Use Technology – Fitness apps and online classes can offer new workouts and keep you motivated. Many apps provide tracking features, challenges, and virtual communities to help you stay on track.
Stay Accountable
If like me, you know you are going to be glued to the Olympics & Tennis this summer then being accountable is crucial.
- Set Realistic Goals – Aim for achievable and specific goals. Whether it’s maintaining a certain number of workouts per week or trying a new activity, having goals will keep you focused.
- Track Your Progress – Keeping a fitness journal or using an app to track your progress can be motivating. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small. Even better, come and join our FREE Facebook group where we’ll be setting a challenge over the summer to keep you on track.
- Stay Flexible – It’s okay to miss a workout occasionally. What’s important is to get back on track and not let it derail your overall fitness plan.
