Menopause Myths Debunked: It’s Time to Set The Record Straight!
Menopause has been around since, well… forever, yet somehow, it’s still wrapped in myths, horror stories, and outdated advice that make it sound like the end of the world. Spoiler alert: it’s not! In fact, this stage of life can be one of the most freeing, empowering, and downright exciting times—if we stop buying into the nonsense and start embracing it for what it really is.
Menopause isn’t the end, it’s a new beginning!
So, let’s bust some menopause myths and get to the good stuff, shall we?
Myth #1: Menopause = The End of Youth (a.k.a. Welcome to Frumpville!)
🔎 Reality Check: Menopause does not mean you’re suddenly going to start wearing beige cardigans, talking about your ailments 24/7 (although you may find yourself moaning about them a little more than you used to), and fading into the background like an old sepia photo.
Midlife is actually a time when many of us feel more confident, self-assured, and comfortable in our own skin than ever before. We’ve spent years looking after everyone else—now is our time to shine. Whether that means trying new things, setting fresh goals, or simply embracing your fabulous, wiser self, menopause isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of a whole new, empowered you!
Myth #2: Hot Flashes Will Ruin Your Life Forever
🔥 Reality Check: Yes, hot flashes can be annoying (who needs a built-in radiator?!), but they aren’t your new permanent state of being.
There are plenty of ways to manage them, from tweaking your diet and reducing stress to making lifestyle changes that help regulate your body’s response. Plus, they won’t last forever—so no, you’re not doomed to a lifetime of sweating through your clothes at the most inconvenient moments. (Although, let’s be honest, those do make for funny stories later!)
Myth #3: A Weak Pelvic Floor is Just Something You Have to Live With
🩲 Reality Check: Yes, declining oestrogen can lead to a weaker pelvic floor, but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a lifetime of crossing your legs every time you sneeze or stocking up on TENA Ladies!
Your pelvic floor is just like any other muscle—it can be strengthened with the right exercises. Practicing pelvic floor exercises (hello, Kegels!), incorporating Pilates into your routine, and even working with a women’s health physiotherapist can help ensure your pelvic floor stays strong and supportive.
So, let’s ditch the ‘just put up with it’ mindset—because laughing or coughing without fear is something we all deserve!
Myth #4: Weight Gain is Inevitable—Just Accept It
🍫 Reality Check: Okay, yes, our metabolism does slow down a bit, but that doesn’t mean weight gain is an unavoidable curse.
What does change is how our bodies respond to food, stress, and movement. Strength training, eating enough protein, managing stress, and prioritising sleep all play a huge role in keeping your body strong, energised, and feeling great. The key? Focus on health, not just weight.
Your body is changing—so your approach to taking care of it should change too.
Myth #5: You Have to Go Through This Alone
👭 Reality Check: Absolutely not! If there’s one thing that makes this transition easier, it’s connection.
Years ago “the change” just wasn’t discussed. Everything was all very hush-hush and brushed under the carpet. Finally though, we are realising that it needs to be talked about. As they say, knowledge is power.
Surrounding yourself with like-minded women who get it—who understand the mood swings, the brain fog, and the occasional urge to run away and live in a cottage by the sea (who me?)—makes all the difference.
That’s why communities like my free Facebook group, Midlife, Menopause & Beyond, exist—to remind you that you’re not alone, you’re not crazy, and you can thrive through this stage of life with a little support and a lot of laughter (without the need for Tena pads).
Embrace This Chapter—It’s Your Time to Thrive!
Menopause isn’t something to fear; it’s something to own. It’s a time of transformation, of rediscovering yourself, and of finally putting you first.
