Feeling Hot Hot Hot…..?
As soon as the temperatures start to climb, I hear the same question time and time again…
“Should I still be exercising in this heat?”
The short answer?
Yes… but it might need to look a little different.
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is thinking our only two options are to either carry on exactly as normal or stop altogether.
There is another way.
Our bodies are already working much harder in hot weather. They have to regulate our temperature by sending more blood to the skin and producing sweat to help cool us down. This means your heart is working harder, you can tire more quickly, become dehydrated faster and simply feel like everything takes more effort.
Add fluctuating hormones into the mix and it’s no surprise that hot flushes, poor sleep, fatigue and low energy can all feel even more intense during a heatwave.
This isn’t your body letting you down.
It’s your body asking you to work with it rather than against it.
Instead of asking…
“Should I exercise today?”
Try asking…
“What type of movement would support me today?”
Sometimes the answer might still be your usual workout.
Other days it might mean:
- Exercising first thing in the morning before the day heats up.
- Choosing a shorter or gentler session instead of pushing through a longer one.
- Reducing the intensity slightly.
- Taking more rest breaks.
- Drinking plenty of water before, during and after exercise.
- Listening to your body without feeling guilty.
Remember, consistency is built over weeks, months and years—not by forcing yourself through one uncomfortable workout.
This is exactly why I build flexibility into my own classes.
If we’re facing particularly hot weather, I may move a class slightly earlier or swap the planned session for something more supportive.
Instead of a higher-energy workout, we might enjoy a calming Pilates session, a beautiful stretch and mobility class, or a shorter Lift Lean workout that still gives you all the benefits of resistance training without leaving you feeling completely exhausted.
It’s about adapting, not abandoning.
One of the biggest advantages of having access to on-demand workouts is that you’re not tied to one specific class time or type of class.
You can choose to exercise at 7am while the house is still cool, fit in a quick 20-minute Lift Lean session before work, or unwind in the evening with Pilates or a gentle stretch session when the temperature starts to drop.
Having that choice makes it so much easier to stay consistent.
And consistency is where the magic happens.
Not perfection.
Not pushing through.
Just showing up in the way your body needs on that particular day.
So if you’ve found yourself thinking…
“I’ll wait until the weather cools down before I start again…”
I’d encourage you not to press pause.
Simply press adapt instead.
Your future self will thank you for it.
