Why Autumn Can Leave You Feeling Flat (and What You Can Do About It)

There’s something comforting about autumn, isn’t there?

The cosy jumpers, candles, and crisp morning air, the stunning colours nature produces… until, suddenly, it’s dark at 4:30 pm, the heating’s on full blast, and your motivation has gone into hibernation.

If you’ve noticed your mood dipping or energy feeling lower lately, you’re definitely not alone (or broken). The change in season can have a real impact — both physically and emotionally — especially during midlife.

🌤️ Less light, less lift

As the daylight hours shrink, so does our exposure to natural sunlight — which means our vitamin D levels drop too. This little nutrient plays a big role in everything from our mood and immune system to how well we sleep.

It’s no wonder so many of us start feeling more sluggish, achy, or just a bit “off” this time of year.  With approximately 50% of the UK population being deficient on Vitamin D it’s hardly surprising really.

🧠 Motivation dips (and that’s okay)

The darker mornings can make it harder to get up and get moving, even when we know how much better we feel afterwards.

You might find yourself reaching for comfort foods, skipping workouts, or feeling a little more irritable than usual. That doesn’t mean you’re failing — it’s simply your body responding to the seasonal change.

🍁 Your body’s asking for balance

As the weather turns, your body naturally craves warmth, rest, and nourishment — so it’s the perfect time to focus on gentle movement, nutrient-rich foods, and moments of calm that keep you feeling grounded rather than burnt out.

This isn’t about doing more.

It’s about tuning in, slowing down, and giving your body what it truly needs so you can feel well and stay energised right through to Christmas.
